Fall Lawn Fertilization

post Category: Lawn post Author: admin post Comments: No Comments »

It’s time to start thinking about fertilizing your St. Augustine lawns again.  After the severe drought we’ve experienced, there are no doubt some bare patches in your lawn, particularly where there is not any shade.  This time, we are going with a 1-1-5 winterization formula which will help promote root growth and also protect the lawn from the upcoming winter season.

The standard 3-1-2 formulation that is used primarily in the spring would be OK if the summer was not so severe and the winter forecast was your standard 2 to 3 light freezes.  But with the drout taking its toll on even the best maintained lawns, it’s time to put some extra potassium down to get those roots good and strong and phosphorus to promote spreading to fill in those bare patches.

Don’t forget to aerate your lawn before putting down the fertilizer.  This will make it more effective.  Do this after a good solid rain when the top soil is softer.  Have your fertilizer on hand and ready to go after one of our infamous fall rain storms and your lawn will be back on the right track.
