Dealing with the Drought

post Category: Garden, Lawn post Author: admin post Comments: No Comments »

Well my friends, it’s been a rough month of July and we’re still not out of the water (pun intended).  We have manditory water rationing in our neighborhood.  Watering from a pressurized source is limited to odd/even days based on your address and only from 8pm to 8am.  Needless to say, this is wreaking havoc with the lawn and plants.

In keeping with the spirit of the controls that are in place, here are some things we are doing to mitigate the potential damages.

  • Move plants into shaded areas to minimize evaporation and over exposure to the sun.
  • Place a tent over your garden area to provide shade during the heat of the day and also to trap and retain dew.
  • Reap any fruits and vegitables as early as possible (especially tomatoes).
  • Capture water that ususally goes down the drain from inside the house (shower water, cooking water, hand rinsing water) and dump it in areas of the lawn that have been hit hardest by the lack of rain.

With any kind of luck we wont have to deal with this for too much longer.  But until we do get a few good saturating rain storms, give these tips a try and see if you can salvage the bulk of your landscaping while keeping in compliance with the water rationing.
